UV Disinfection Systems in Shellsburg, IA

UV Disinfection Systems in Shellsburg, IA

A UV system passes water through a stainless chamber past a mercury lamp that emits 254 nm ultraviolet light. That wavelength damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce. Nothing is added to the water and there is no taste. Shellsburg, IA Well Water Treatment installs UV disinfection systems for well owners in Shellsburg, IA.

UV only works when light can reach the organisms. That means the water going in has to be clean enough. Iron above about 0.3 mg/L, manganese above 0.05 mg/L, or hardness above roughly 7 grains per gallon will coat the quartz sleeve and block the light. So we look at your well water testing results first and add a sediment filter, iron filter or softener ahead of the UV if needed.

What we check on every install:

• Flow rate, so the unit is sized for your peak gpm
• A 5 micron sediment prefilter
• A power supply on a circuit that will not get switched off
• A sensor or alarm on larger units

Lamps lose output over time and should be changed about once a year, even if they still glow. Sleeves need cleaning too.
